Donn here misrepresents what industry insiders were telling him.
The phrase: "sharpening the pencil" definitively does NOT
refer to fudging results. It refers instead to doing modern day calcs
formerly avoided by slide-rule era engineers, 
on account of their difficulty.

It means: Doing the math more accurately,
in order to capture all available margin.
